"X-men: The Last Stand"
Let's hope so...
Let me start off by saying that I admired what Bryan Singer had done for the series. Mr. Singer created an interesting world inhabited by unique and fascinating humans and mutants. In short, he did justice to the quality of the ideas crafted by the comic book writers and artists who turned the "X-men" comic into Marvel's top franchise.
What worked in the first two installments works in "Last Stand" as well. Hugh Jackman makes a great Wolverine/Logan. Ian McKellan owns the role of "Magneto". Patric Stewart was born and made bald to play Professor Charles Xavier.
What didn't work was when they strayed from the fascinating character development and bit off more "blockbuster" than they could chew. The special effects were sub-par for a film of this magnitude. Colossus and the Juggernaut were horribly rendered.
Prior to the film, I wasn't sure if Famke Janssen had the acting chops to carry a Jean Grey/Phoenix role. Nothing I saw during the movie changed my mind. The lesser "evil" mutants in Magneto's band were a lame bunch of rejects and not interesting in the least. How do you tell an X-men from an evil mutant? The X-men have shiny new leather body suits while the evil mutants wear beat up old leather. What's with movies and leather body suits? It seems that ever since "The Matrix" it takes a herd of cows to outfit the cast members. BE ORIGINAL HOLLYWOOD!
Why would Magneto bother moving the entire Golden Gate bridge when with a fraction of the effort he could brought Alcatraz (or the portion he needed) to him?
Comic movies walk a dangerous tight-rope. How much realism is required? How much comic book silliness is allowed? This movie has a bit too much of both I'm afraid.
